Toivo Asheeke – Arming Black Consciousness: Azanian Nat’list Tradition & South Africa Armed Struggle
June 18, 2023, Dr. Toivo Asheeke joins the show to discuss his recent book entitled: “Arming Black Consciousness: The Azanian Black Nationalist Tradition and South Africa’s Armed Struggle, 1967–1993.”
Toivo Asheeke is Assistant Professor at Georgia State University. Dr. Asheeke is a scholar-activist whose research interests intersect the disciplines of Historical-Sociology, History and Africana Studies. Dr. Asheeke comes from a Black Internationalist background with parents who have fought for the freedom of peoples of African descent on both sides of the Atlantic.
Dr. Asheeke is a committed grassroots activist, and as a scholar-activist, he has published widely on Black Consciousness and Black Power in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Southern African Studies and the Journal of African American History. And Dr. Asheeke dissertation won the Dissertation of the Year Award 2019 at Binghamton University.
On June 8, 2023, Dr. Asheeke published the important and must read book, which is also the main topic of our conversation today, entitled: “Arming Black Consciousness: The Azanian Black Nationalist Tradition and South Africa’s Armed Struggle, 1967–1993.”
